Education
Your hair deserves to be taken care of between appointments. This guide covers everything from daily routines to aftercare, so your results last longer and your hair stays healthy.
Daily Routine
There is no universal answer. How often you wash depends on your hair type, scalp, and lifestyle. Over-washing strips natural oils; under-washing leads to buildup. Here's a general guide:
Fine hair tends to get weighed down quickly by oil and product. Washing more frequently helps maintain volume and a clean scalp. Use a lightweight, volumizing shampoo and avoid heavy conditioners at the root.
Normal hair can handle a longer stretch between washes. A good dry shampoo on day two or three can extend freshness. Focus conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends, not the scalp.
Thicker and curlier hair types retain moisture better and can go longer between washes. Frequent washing can cause dryness and frizz. Focus on deep conditioning and sealing in moisture with oil or cream.
Pro tip: If your scalp is itchy or flaky, it may be a sign of buildup rather than dryness. Try a clarifying shampoo once a month to reset your scalp.
What to Use
The right products make a significant difference in how your hair looks and feels between appointments. Here is what to look for based on your hair type and service.
Color fades faster when exposed to harsh sulfates. Use a sulfate-free shampoo specifically formulated for color-treated hair.
Product buildup at the bonds or wefts can cause slippage and damage. Keep it clean and light near the roots.
Dry hair needs hydration, but too much protein can make it brittle. Alternate between moisturizing and protein treatments.
General rule: Less is more. Too many products layered together can cause buildup that weighs hair down and dulls color. Start with a shampoo, conditioner, and one styling product and add from there.
After Your Appointment
How you treat your hair in the 48 to 72 hours after your appointment matters. Follow these guidelines to protect your results and make them last.
Freshly colored hair needs time for the cuticle to close and the pigment to fully set. Washing too soon causes premature fading.
Hot water opens the hair cuticle and accelerates color fade. Cool water seals the cuticle and preserves vibrancy.
Use a sulfate-free, color-safe formula from your very first wash after the service and going forward.
Both strip color quickly. If you swim, wear a cap or rinse your hair with clean water immediately after.
Steam, sweat, and humidity are the enemies of a fresh blowout. Try to stay dry for at least the first day.
Silk reduces friction and helps your style hold its shape overnight. A loose braid or top knot also helps preserve the blow-out.
Apply dry shampoo at the roots on day two or three to refresh volume without washing. Let it sit for a few minutes before brushing through.
On day two, a round brush with a low-heat dryer or a flat iron on a lower setting can revive the style without damage.
Use a soft-bristle or loop brush starting from the ends and working up. Never brush from the root down as this puts tension on the bonds.
Wash in a downward motion, never circular. Circular washing can tangle extensions and weaken bonds over time.
Going to sleep with wet extensions can cause matting and weaken the attachment. Always dry completely before lying down.
A loose braid or ponytail prevents tangling while you sleep and reduces stress on the bonds.
Most cuts benefit from a trim every 6 to 12 weeks depending on hair growth and style. Regular trims prevent split ends from traveling up the shaft.
Match your products to your texture. Fine hair needs lightweight hold; thick hair benefits from smoothing creams or oils.
Always apply a heat protectant before blow-drying or using hot tools. This prevents breakage and keeps ends healthy between appointments.
Split ends travel upward if left untreated. Even a small trim every few weeks keeps the style looking intentional and clean.
Before You Come In
Coming in prepared helps make the most of your time in the chair and ensures the best possible results. Here is how to prepare depending on your service.
Wash your hair 24 to 48 hours before your color appointment. Slightly dirty hair is actually ideal as natural oils protect the scalp during the coloring process.
Extensions adhere and blend best when your hair is freshly washed and completely free of product buildup.
For a cut, come in with your hair in its natural state so the cut can be tailored to how your hair actually behaves. For a blowout, come with clean or lightly washed hair.
